 Indian Ports - In Dire Straits

As the global economy recovers from the current slowdown and the concomitant rise in India's foreign trade occurs, Indian ports need to gear up their creaking infrastructure to be able to handle additional cargo volumes. Satish Chavan reports.

The biggest priority for India's infrastructure sector is to decongest its major ports and develop new ones to augment its cargo handling capacities. Unless this is done on a priority basis major Indian ports will not be able to handle the additional cargo traffic when trade picks up again after the ongoing slowdown. All major Indian ports are presently working at 100 per cent capacity.  In view of the projected eight
