Rising Star

SS Rathore, Chairman & Managing Director, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam, has finally succeeded after over a decade lost to disputes and legal battles. The 1,450-MW Sardar Sarovar hydroelectric project was recently inaugurated after completing raising Sardar Sarovar Dam's wall. Known to be the world's second largest dam in size, the entire project, estimated at US$ 8 billion, is located on the Narmada River in Gujarat. The main dam is 3,970-ft-long by 534-ft-high measured above the deepest foundation level, and its reservoir capacity is 4.75 mn acre ft. Rathore has evidently set an example through this project, which is expected to provide power and water to 9,000 villages in the three states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
