Cargo handling at Kandla port rises 7.1%

Cargo handling at Kandla port rose 7.1 percent in August driven by a 23 percent rise in the fertiliser cargo, reports suggest. The port is said to have handled 4.8 million tonne of petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products during the month.

The port management has lined up several projects in the coming years including strengthening of two oil jetties  to handle large-sized vessels, construction of port craft jetty, development of land in the west of the existing custom fencing wall. Planning Commission expects Kandla port to have 145.13 mn t capacity by 2016-17 from around 85.80 mn t at present.

Meanwhile, the management of the port plans to engage a contractor for repair and maintenance of fenders inside cargo jetty area.
