Ministry seeks approval status for metro rail project

Union urban development ministry wants to know whether the Chandigarh government secured approval from the Punjab, and Haryana governments for the proposed metro rail project in the union territory.

It may be recalled that the union territory administration submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the union ministry for approval.

The union ministry also asked the UT administration to give details of the fund-sharing formula with Punjab and Haryana. The MUD also wants to know how the required funds would be generated.

It is learnt that the Punjab cabinet had recently approved the project, clearing the decks for linking Chandigarh with SAS Nagar.

Media reports suggest that the Haryana government is yet to give its formal approval even though it has agreed to the project in principal. The administration would again be writing to Haryana on the issue.

It is learnt that officials from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh would soon hold a meeting to discuss the project in detail. The estimated cost of the project is nearly Rs 10,900 crore, which would be shared by the centre, Chandigarh administration and the governments of Punjab and Haryana.
