Court directs civic body to implement solid waste rules

Jammu and Kashmir High Court asked Srinagar Municipal Corporation to implement municipal solid waste rules 2000 within three months and file an affidavit revealing within what time they will complete the implementation.

The court gave this direction while hearing a petition Farah Khan versus state. The court appointed Registrar Judicial as commissioner to visit the site and submit the report regarding ground reality of the same.

Earlier, SMC submitted a status report in line with the solid waste management rules 2000 and the steps that have been taken.

At land fill site Achen, the civic body identified 30 kanals of land exclusively for scientific disposal of non-biodegradable municipal waste by making use of machine to be installed by M/S Mira Green Tech, USA.

The SMC report states that to control bad odour emitting from land fill cell where garbage is dumped, the corporation in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (J&KERA), has started biological remediation of garbage.

The civic body sprays 2000 liters of environment friendly anti-bacteria chemical over the garbage and the resultant Leachate collected at land fill site has reduced bad odour up to 90 per cent, SMC has said in its report.

The J&KERA has installed two metric tonne capacity WINDROW compost plant as pilot project which is operational for last two weeks, the report further says.
