Plan panel clears Rs 41 bn outlay for Himachal Pradesh

Planning Commission approved Rs 4,100 crore worth plan outlay for Himachal Pradesh in 2013-14.

This was approved at a meeting between Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and the State Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

During the meeting, Virbhadra Singh said the Planning Commission should draw a strategy for the development of infrastructure projects like roads, railways, airports and power for North-Western Himalayan states, as is being done for the North Eastern states.

He said Shimla is the only town in the state with population of more than one lakh which is eligible for funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

He requested the commission to revise cost norms and normative completion time for all centrally-sponsored schemes in the state owing to difficult geographical conditions and limited working season in the hill state.

The commission said Himachal Pradesh has great potential in terms of natural resources which should be harnessed to generate sustainable growth and income opportunities for the people.

The state government needs to prepare a comprehensive plan to improve high value as well as religious tourism, the commission said.
