By Raja Iyer

In order to provide air connectivity to hilly areas of the north eastern region, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is upgrading three non-operational airports at Daparizo in Arunachal Pradesh, Tura in Meghalaya and Kamalpur in Tripura. Once upgraded, these airports will have the capacity to operate ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircrafts to connect the remote areas.

According to the website of the AAI, there are 449 airports or airstrips in the country and of these, the authority owns and manages 92 airports and 28 civil enclaves at defence airfields and provides air traffic services over the entire Indian airspace and adjoining oceanic areas.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the authority is in the process of roping in a contractor for the development of airport at Ajmer (Kishangarh) in Rajasthan.
