Goa govt asked to find alternative site for waste project

Goa government received request from some political parties to find alternative site for the proposed garbage treatment plant as the selected site falls near a church.

The state government selected Baiguinim for the garbage treatment project and this would be just 500 m away from 'Cruz dos Milagres' (Church of the Miraculous Cross) where a first of its kind spiritual centre is coming up. Further, the historical Shiva temple of Brahmapuri lies 500 m away.

He said the government should respect the sentiments of the Christian minority and others who have objected to the plant and disband its idea of having the garbage plant at Baiguinim.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) said the state government's move to set up an ultra modern mixed waste plant at Baiguinim has shocked the minorities as it is just about a kilometre away from the churches of Old Goa and St Augustine Tower, which have been declared World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The party said the state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had during the July 2012 assembly session made it clear in the assembly that a new locality for setting up of the hi-tech solid waste management plant has become necessary as the acquired Baiguinim land has become unfeasible for the purpose.

Parikar also said that it has tentatively fixed September 2012 as the deadline for identifying the correct working technology for the plant as well as locating new land.
