NTPC to set up drain, sewerage plant

By Raja Iyer

The country's largest power producer NTPC wants to award contracts for the construction of RCC drain at its township in Bongaigaon district of Assam. It also wants to rope in a construction firm for setting up a sewerage treatment plant in the district.

The state-run company is developing a 750 mw (3x 250 mw) thermal power project in the district and this is said to be the company's first investment in the north east. The foundation stone for the project was laid in January 2006 by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and work on the project is still going on.

Bongaigaon district was created on September 29, 1989 from parts of Goalpara and Kokrajhar districts. In 2004, a part of the district was split to carve out another district named Chirang.
