Punjab, Haryana govts support metro rail project

The government of Punjab and Haryana gave wholehearted support to the proposed metro rail project connecting Chandigarh with the two states. This information was given by the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj Patil.

According to the plan, the Chandigarh administration would set up two metro rail corridors to connect Chandigarh with Sector 21 in Panchkula, Mullanpur and Mohali.

The future of the project depends on the contribution of both the states as the UT will have to prove the financial viability of the metro to the ministry of urban development, showing adequate number of passengers from neighbouring states.

The metro rail project would tackle problems in connectivity between Chandigarh and Panchkula, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said.

He assured all possible support from Haryana to ensure successful implementation. Making a comparison with Mohali, he said while the Punjab city has eight links with Chandigarh, Panchkula has only one. Therefore, he requested the administrator to improve connectivity.

The administration of UT along with the state governments of Punjab and Haryana would seek approval from the central government for the project.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal commended the metro rail project saying it would fulfil the need for faster and more comfortable travel.
