Collector for action against illegal constructions in Pune

Pune District Collector Vikas Deshmukh on June 10 asked the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the sub-divisional magistrate to file cases under the NHAI Act and Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act (MRTP) against those responsible for the illegal constructions on the four-kilometer stretch near Katraj tunnel on Pune-Satara road, where a mother and daughter were swept away in gushing rainwater on June 6.

Deshmukh also directed the sub-divisional magistrate of Bhor to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the cause of accidental deaths and asked the authorities concerned to file cases by Tuesday. The collector conducted a joint meeting of the officials of NHAI, district administration and rural police to discuss the matter and decide further course of action against those responsible for the accident.

Deshmukh said that apart from filing cases under various acts, strict instructions have been issued to the administration to restrict illegal constructions and illegal dumping of soil, debris and concrete with immediate effect.

Such activities hamper natural flow of water in the tunnel. The collector said the NHAI authorities have been asked to file cases against those involved in the construction of illegal approach roads to the national highway as well as those who have blocked and disturbed rainwater flow in the drains.
