Govt may implement Rs 140 bn metro project in 3 phases

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi informed that the proposed metro rail project in Guwahati may cost Rs 14,000 crore and it may be implemented in three phases.

It may be noted that recently the union government cleared the proposal for the project and also earmarked Rs 25 crore for the feasibility study and the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The state government plans to lay a 65 km-metro rail corridor between Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport and Narengi in the city in the first phase.

In the second phase, the state government proposes to lay a corridor between Paltan Bazar and Khanapara area of the city, while the third will cover a stretch between Khanapara area and Jalukbari area of the city.

For studying the feasibility of the project and preparing the DPR, it takes five to six years, Gogoi said. In Assam, it could take more time as we have less working days because of rain.

But he said the state government would make it as fast as possible. Gogoi said that once the project was complete, the ever-increasing traffic congestion in Guwahati would ease.
