Goa CM lays foundation for Vasco commercial building

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on July 27 laid the foundation stone for a 5 crore commercial building - a golden jubilee signature project of the Mormugao municipal council (MMC) at Vasco. MMC laid the foundation stone near a house next to the MPT hall, in the port town. The house will be demolished to make place for the golden jubilee signature project, a 5-storied commercial building. The house and the area around it measures about 584 sq m and presently shelters a PWD office and the office of Mormugao patrakar lekhak sangh. The house will be demolished after August 1 with the chief minister directing to complete the work before the next Tilak Jayanti. This is a commercial project which will boost the income of the municipality as well as add to the development of the city, said Parrikar. The project will be constructed with the 3 crore fund that was allotted to all the 'A class municipalities by the Goa government on account of golden jubilee celebration of Goa's liberation, two years back. The remaining 2 crore will be given by the state government. Parrikar further said that the government provides funds, but municipalities should have the capacity to spend them on right projects. Though money was given to all the 14 municipalities, the Mapusa municipality was the first one to take up a project and now MMC has taken the initiative, he said. The new five-storey commercial building will have a mall, offices, residence for the chief officer of MMC and an office for MPLS.
