Old Hindustan-Tibet road in Himachal to be widened

In a major relief to people of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, the State government is to widen the 120-km-long old Hindustan-Tibet road. The government's decision is a relief to the district people as frequent closure of national highway-22 affects not only the supplies of essential commodities, but they are also unable to send their produce to outside markets in time. This was announced by the State Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on September 29 at a public rally in Reckong Peo, the district headquarters of Kinnaur. The old Hindustan-Tibet road in Kinnaur district would be restored for vehicular traffic and it would be broadened for running bus services to ensure round-the-year transportation facility to the people of the district Due to heavy landslide near Pangi village, the old Hindustan-Tibet road and NH-22 have been damaged. As a result, the entire Pooh subdivision is cut off. Around 250 bighas of apple orchards in the adjoining areas have come under the sliding zone that has further aggravated the situation.
