Kerala faces funds crunch for road projects in Kochi

The Kerala government and the Kochi Corporation are facing lack of funds to acquire land for many over-bridge and road projects in Kochi city. As a result, the projects are becoming non-starters. Funds given under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for the project cover only the cost of construction. According to sources, an overbridge on a two-lane road can be built for less than Rs 15 crore. But, in the city, land acquisition and rehabilitation costs may work out to around Rs 100 crore, which is around seven times the project’s cost.
