Challenge fund and safe-corridor project for Kerala

The World Bank has earmarked $4 million for setting up the challenge fund to develop and implement district-level road safety programmes in Kerala. This fund will be created as part of the ongoing Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) phase-II aided by the World Bank. The $445 million KSTP aims at upgrading 363 km of roads in the State to world-class standards. The fund will build on the best practices adopted and lessons learnt from the 80-km safe-corridor demonstration project to be set up from Kazhakuttam to Adoor. The fund objective would be to develop locally another 10 safe-corridor zones in the State and to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and traffic management strategies. A programme management team will be set up to support the planning of the safe-corridor project and the challenge fund.
