KWA moves at snail pace and city of Kochi suffers

The city of Kochi is facing acute shortage of drinking water over the years. The demand supply gap has widened to more than 120 million litre a day (MLD). The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is not doing enough to bridge this gap. KWA has not even completed the detailed project report (DPR) of a Rs 1,000 crore project mooted a year ago to streamline water supply to the city and adjoining areas. This project could enhance the water supply by 135 MLD. The DPR once it is prepared will be submitted to the centre to seek assistance under JnNURM scheme. The project is likely to take three years to complete. The KWA needs to fast track the execution of this project as many other factors such as effect on demand due to Kochi Metro Rail project is not even considered.
