KWA waits for pumpsets to make Maradu drinking water project operational

The Maradu drinking water project was targeted to be commissioned in mid-March. This could have solved the water shortage in West Kochi. The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is working on this project and work has not yet completed. The laying of pipelines is completed. The project is expected to provide 100 million litre a day (MLD) of water to the city and suburbs once it becomes operational. The delay is caused because KWA failed to purchase the pump sets in time. KWA officials maintain that the delivery of the pumps was due in February 2014 and are expecting it soon. It would take 45 days to commission the project once the pumps are in place. The Rs 210-crore Maradu drinking water project got started in 2007 and is likely to benefit people in Maradu, Kumbalam, Kumbalangi, Chellanam, Edakochi, Fort Kochi, Naval Base and Thevara areas.
