Metro Moves

By AHLAM RAIS

Tracking the progress in some of India's upcoming metro projects, the April 2014 edition of CONSTRUCTION WORLD had the Cover Story titled 'Rush Hour' that focused on the metro projects across the country. CW now presents a follow-up report on the latest opportunities and happenings in the metro space.

India seems to be buzzing with new metro projects across the country. Projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore that are in the pipeline include metro projects in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Chennai, Jaipur, Navi Mumbai, etc. So, what's happening!

Jaipur Metro

The Jaipur metro will be elevated as well as underground. While Phase-1B is fully underground, Phase-2 will be around 5-7 km underground. "For Phase 1B, we will require tunnel boring machines," informs Ashwini Saxena, Director-Projects, Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation. In terms of technology, modern type of coaches, overhead equipment, signaling systems, etc, will be required. Saxena adds, "For Phase-1B, tenders have been awarded to Continental Engineering Corporation, Taiwan, for the construction of 2.3 km underground tunnels and stations from Chandpur to Badichipur. The cost of the tender awarded is Rs 507 crore."

Namma Metro

"While all tenders for Phase-1 are complete, major tenders are expected to float for Phase-2 this year," says BL Yashavanth Chavan, Chief Engineer & General Manager, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation. "We plan to use the latest state-of-the-art technologies for this project. These systems will be selected, indigenised or imported."

Navi Mumbai metro

Contracts for electrical, mechanical work and connectivity between the mainline and depot have been awarded. "The cost of this tender is about Rs 67-68 crore," says a source from Navi Mumbai Metro. From the technological aspect, the latest signalling systems such as the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) will be considered.

Kochi Metro

"Tenders for signaling and telecom, electrical and track works are being floated," says Elias George, Managing Director, Kochi Metro Rail Corporation. CBTC and platform screen gates are some of the latest technologies that will be used for this project.

Hyderabad Metro

Work on the Hyderabad Metro project is in progress and expected to be operational by 2017. "Modern technologies in rolling stock, signaling, tracks and traction have been selected for adoption in the metro. The trains will be supported with technologies such as the Regenerative Electric Braking, CBTC – thus, it will be the first metro in India to claim the train control by CBTC technology," says VB Gadgil, Chief Executive & Managing Director, L&T Metro rail (Hyderabad) Ltd.

Guess, the metro fever is here to stay!
