Eleven road projects worth Rs 18,000 crore covering 1,300 km to be awarded soon

The Transport minister Nitin Gadkari has asked for a list of road projects that can be taken on priority. The road ministry has prepared a list of eleven such projects that can be awarded in the next six months. These projects are worth Rs 18,000 crore and cover 1,300 km. The project appraisal process is over and the nod of the ministry is required to begin the award process. The road ministry could award just 3,169 km of road projects in the FY2013-14 against a target of 7,500 km. The road sector development has slowed down in the last two years due to overall economic situation, land acquisition issues, funding issues and pending environment clearances. The new government is believed to have an internal target of awarding 8,500 km of road projects in the current fiscal. Out of this around 3,500 km of road projects are likely to be awarded through the PPP mode and the rest on EPC basis.
