SMC target to achieve slum-free Surat by 2015 needs more resources

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has repeatedly claimed to make the city of Surat slum-free by 2015. This seems to be unachievable as about 350 slum settlements in the city housing nearing 90,000 families are yet to be shifted. As per a recent survey, the civic body could shift nearly a lakh of people and about 36,000 families from slums to EWS quarters. But still lot remains to be done. The civic body has built 42,300 houses under JnNURM scheme against a target of 46,856. The corporation is in a position to build 6,000 homes every year. More efforts and resources would be required to make Surat a slum-free city in the future.
