Call drops: Telcos earning Rs.250 cr daily but not investing, says TRAI

A ¨cartel¨ of four-five telecom firms with a billion subscribers are making Rs.250 crore daily but not investing on their networks to improve services and check call drops, the government has told the Supreme Court. ¨They have stupendous growth but are making minimum investments to improve the quality of service on their networks to curb call drops,¨ Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said. Rohatgi, appearing for TRAI before a bench of justices Kurian Joseph and RF Nariman, also defended the penalty imposed by the regulator on telecom firms. He said, ¨They are making around Rs.1 lakh crore a year from calls and the impact of penalty will be Rs.270-280 crore and not thousands of crores as claimed.¨
