THE AWARDEES
The following awards were finalised for Developers, Government agencies, and Financiers in Power, Roads, Airports, Ports and maritime, and Overall:
Most admired developer (Power)
Torrent Power. The jury found the company’s strategies innovative in managing the external environment, and found relevant that the company evidenced power distribution’s revitalisation and turned around of the sticky Bhiwandi power franchise area.
Most admired developer (Roads)
IRB Infrastructure Development. Despite its projects being largely confined to the western region, IRB’s large portfolio of projects and impeccable project execution record found the jury’s nod.
Most admired developer (Airports)
GMR Group. The Jury unanimously agreed that besides its success with the Hyderabad and Delhi airports, the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (SGIA) at Istanbul, Turkey were GMR’s key achievements that decided in its favour.
Most admired developer (Ports & Maritime )
Mundra Port and SEZ. The jury deliberated on the top companies based on the perception survey. Mundra Port & SEZ emerged as the unanimous choice of the jury.
Most admired infrastructure developer (Overall).
Reliance Infrastructure. RIL’s presence in multiple sectors including power distribution, power generation, metro rail, roads and good execution of these projects earned the company its award. The MD and CEO of Tata Realty and Infrastructure, who was on the jury, did not participate in the discussion and did not vote.
Most Promising Infrastructure developer (Overall)
GVK. This choice by the jury was underlined for its presence in multiple sectors and continued expansion.
Emerging state for infrastructure
Bihar. The key reason the jury cited for this dark horse was the increasing efforts by the state in 2009 to attract private sector participation in infrastructure development of the state.
Most admired facilitator (State)
Gujarat. The state government’s aggression in obtaining private participation in several sectors, including power, ports and shipping, oil and gas and related industries, went in its favour with the jury.
Most admired facilitator (Centre)
Ministry of Urban Development. MUD was chosen for its proactive approach in dealing with issues relating to JNNURM funding and transparency in the Ministry’s functioning.
Most admired Infrastructure Financier
Indian Infrastructure Finance Company (IIFCL). The jury chose IIFCL for this award because of the large disbursements made by IIFCL to various infrastructure developers. Its success in raising funds was also cited as an achievement. The Chairman of IIFCL, who was on the jury, was not part of this discussion and did not vote.
Most admired company/group for strong ethical practices
Tata Group. The jury suggested that this award be added to reward companies who have demonstrated growth while demonstrating high ethical standards. The Tata Group was unanimously chosen as the winner in this category. The MD & CEO of Tata Realty & Infrastructure, who was on the jury, did not vote.
Project of the year
Mumbai Metro Line 1. As one of the most difficult projects to execute because of dense populations, land problems, local disputes and technical complexities, this project from Reliance Infrastructure scored over the rest.
