Tell us about your company and products.
Ajax Fiori is a joint venture established in 1992 between
Ajax Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore and Fiori SpA., Italy.
Subsequently, in 1996 Ajax Fiori entered into a collaboration
agreement with Le Officine, Riunite, Udine (ORU) SpA, Italy
for the manufacture of batching plants in India. We are easy

Tell us about any innovative products introduced.
The D90 - MAXI is a 12-tonne dumper, ideal for large earthmoving
jobs in confined places such as tunnels. Its four-wheel drive
steering and 180° pivoting driver's seat, gives it easy
manoeuvrability. It maintains a maximum speed of 25 km. per
hour and special features include:

BHP Engineers
BHP Engineers, a key player in bulk material handling systems,
has entered into a manufacturing and distribution alliance
with Terex Corp. USA for the South Asian crushing and screening
market. BHP Engineers will manufacture smaller sizes of jaw
crushers and vertical shaft impactors (VSIs) and will represent
the full range of the Cedarapids, Jacques, Canica and Simplicity
range of equipment. Established in 1982, BHP Engineers has
alliances with Rexnord Corporation, USA; BMH Marine, Sweden;
Vimec, Italy; and Satarem, France; through which it has executed
more than 600 orders for systems and equipment in India and
abroad.
"Our crushing and screening plants will be supplied and
serviced from one source and will be largely indigenous, with
the exception of the excellent Cedarapids and Jacques cone

What are your reasons for entering the Indian market?
Deutz as a company is already in the market for almost 30
years. It had an agreement with Greaves Limited and Kirloskar
Oil Engines, manufacturing Deutz engines under licence in
India. A very high number of construction machines manufactured
in India are powered today with air-cooled engines, the design
of the Deutz FL 912 series. Also, a large number of imported
machines are powered with Deutz air and water-cooled engines.
The company is strengthening its position as the end user
and operator become more quality conscious, appreciating lower
operating costs.
What do you expect to achieve in terms of sales and penetration?
For the past two years, Deutz has an annual increase in turnover
of 20-25 per cent. This will be sustained, if not increased,
with higher product awareness and growing market potential.
Are global players equipped to deal with Indian conditions?
The Deutz 912 engine Absolutely. Deutz has designed and built
engines in particular for adverse conditions fin extreme cold,
heat and dust) where maintenance is kept to a minimum but
lifetime is expected to be maximum, for more than 100 years.
The air-cooled system adopted by Indian companies has been
introduced by Deutz. Also, the new demand (and taw) regarding
emission control can easily be accommodated, as our engines
already comply with Euro II and III standards.
What do you foresee as the future of the Indian construction
equipment industry?
With the national policy and efforts to build infrastructure
as well as new housing projects, the construction equipment

Are second-hand products a threat?
Second hand product imports are a threat and have not only
been impeding the growth of indigenously manufactured products
but also squeezing the margins due to the cheap availability
of second-hand equipment in the international market.
How has the performance of the company been?
ECEL has shown a healthy 40 per cent growth in sales in the
first nine months ended December 31st, 2002, compared to the
corresponding period last year. We expect a growth of over
35 per cent in 2002-03 over the previous year, though the
margins are expected to remain under pressure. This growth
has been achieved with out focus on road construction equipment,
helped by the strides being made in road building activity
in the country. In addition, through strategic tie-ups, ECEL
has already expanded its cranes' portfolio to include slew-cranes
of up to 40 T class besides supplying special recovery cranes

Our new generation CP 18 mobile batching plant is ideal for
concrete pump feeding. SSI also manufactures structural components
for plants imported from Stetter GmbH. The company executed
the prestigious 288 cbm/hour capacity plant model H6N to Seeniah
&c Co. at Bhilwara, Rajasthan for the NHAI project; this
plant has already done more than 12,000 cbm of concrete.
Also, SSI manufactures 6 cbm and 4 cbm truck mixers in India

o Vibrating Screen: A single-deck vibrating screen is provided
on the slinger conveyor to remove oversized aggregate received
from the four-bin feeder.
o Slinger Conveyor: An inclined conveyor with a 500 mm. wide
belt mounted on idlers receives aggregate from the gathering
conveyor and feeds it to the dryer.
o Dryer Drum: The dryer is accurately fabricated to ensure
proper heating of aggregates with minimum heat loss. A fully
automatic high-pressure auto jet burner is mounted at one
end of the drum. The discharge chute design discharges heated
aggregate directly onto the load-out conveyor.
o Bitumen Tanks: One/Two Bitumen tanks of 15/20 MT capacity
each are provided. Bitumen is pumped to the dryer drum through
jacketed pipe lines. Tanks are fitted with independent on-off
type burners.
o Dust Collector: The dust collection system consists of enclosed
multiple cyclones, exhaust fan and chimney.
o Load-Out Conveyor: Mixed aggregate from the thermo drum
is discharged on an inclined conveyor provided with a hydraulic
hopper at delivery end for feeding the mix into tippers.
o Mineral Filler: Fabricated from steel plates, it feeds the
required quantity of mineral to the drum.
o Control Cabin: A fully automatic air-conditioned control
cabin with feather touch controls is provided for controlling

Unipave Engineering Products, incorporated in 1973, has established
