Deutz - Falk Weltschat, Director

What are your reasons for entering the Indian market?
Deutz as a company is already in the market for almost 30 years. It had an agreement with Greaves Limited and Kirloskar Oil Engines, manufacturing Deutz engines under licence in India. A very high number of construction machines manufactured in India are powered today with air-cooled engines, the design of the Deutz FL 912 series. Also, a large number of imported machines are powered with Deutz air and water-cooled engines. The company is strengthening its position as the end user and operator become more quality conscious, appreciating lower operating costs.

What do you expect to achieve in terms of sales and penetration?
For the past two years, Deutz has an annual increase in turnover of 20-25 per cent. This will be sustained, if not increased, with higher product awareness and growing market potential.

Are global players equipped to deal with Indian conditions?
The Deutz 912 engine Absolutely. Deutz has designed and built engines in particular for adverse conditions fin extreme cold, heat and dust) where maintenance is kept to a minimum but lifetime is expected to be maximum, for more than 100 years. The air-cooled system adopted by Indian companies has been introduced by Deutz. Also, the new demand (and taw) regarding emission control can easily be accommodated, as our engines already comply with Euro II and III standards.

What do you foresee as the future of the Indian construction equipment industry?
With the national policy and efforts to build infrastructure as well as new housing projects, the construction equipment industry will boom. Contact: Deutz Engine (India) Pvt. Ltd., 201-202 Sohrab Hall, 21 II 25. Email: fwdeutz@vsnl.net

ECEL provides complete solutions and complete satisfaction to its customers by providing the world's best technology and effective after-sales service through its network of 15 officers and 30 dealership outlets, manned by over 150 company trained engineers and sufficient stock of parts.

Are second-hand products a threat?
Second hand product imports are a threat and have not only been impeding the growth of indigenously manufactured products but also squeezing the margins due to the cheap availability of second-hand equipment in the international market.

How has the performance of the company been?
ECEL has shown a healthy 40 per cent growth in sales in the first nine months ended December 31st, 2002, compared to the corresponding period last year. We expect a growth of over 35 per cent in 2002-03 over the previous year, though the margins are expected to remain under pressure. This growth has been achieved with out focus on road construction equipment, helped by the strides being made in road building activity in the country. In addition, through strategic tie-ups, ECEL has already expanded its cranes' portfolio to include slew-cranes of up to 40 T class besides supplying special recovery cranes to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Simplex
Simplex, Bhilai, has formed an equipment bank, providing earthmoving, material handling, mining, power generation and road construction equipment on hire/lease. The huge capital investment required for construction equipment makes it difficult for companies and individuals to buy such equipment. The best solution today is to rent/lease the equipment. This means payment only during actual use, and freedom from maintenance hassles, paying operator salaries, paying interest on finance obtained for purchasing the equipment, etc.
Simplex started with a fleet of just ten equipments a year ago; today, about 60 different equipments are serving the construction fraternity across the length and breadth of India. Construction companies and contractors alike are availing this facility. Considering the response, the company has decided to enhance its fleet to 100 equipments.
Through this bank, equipment is available on hourly, daily, monthly and yearly basis. The terms and conditions of leasing equipment are very simple and widely accepted by the end users. The equipment bank is fully supported by its parent company, Simplex Engineering & Foundry Works Pvt. Ltd. (ISO 9001 accredited), which itself is a construction equipment manufacturer.
Simplex Equipment Bank is different from other rental companies. The reasons are:
o Very experienced operational and maintenance staff (factory-trained).
o Quality service with dome-bound performance.
o Maximum availability of equipment at site.
o Used equipment available on sale.
o Facility of service vehicle.
o Brand new equipment, with less operational cost.
Simples Equipment Bank believes in providing the best services to its customers, evident from the number of repeat orders received and the enormous growth achieved in a short one-year period.

Telco Construction Equipment Company Ltd. (Telcon) - Arindam Banerjee, Asst. Manager

Tell us in brief about your company, products and market share.
We are the leading providers of constructive solutions and currently manufacture a wide range of hydraulic excavators from 2-120 ronnes, valued from Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 5 cr.; back-hoe loaders; wheel loaders; hydraulic and friction crawler cranes; and truck-mounted cranes. We are the market leaders with over 66 per cent share in hydraulic excavators, with highest market share in most models including the most popular 7 tonne and 20 tonne class; and over 25 per cent share in wheel loaders and 100 per cent in crawler cranes. We are experiencing a growth of over 10 per cent vis-a-vis last year in most of our product categories.

What about after-sales service?
Quality support has always been our priority. We work overtime to maintain a high level of genuine spare part availability and to enhance our support network, so that we are able to restore breakdown machines in far-flung areas within the shortest time. We work through a 12 hour (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) toll free service hotline (1600-44-6060) at our head office in Bangalore. We are the first company in the industry to offer this facility.

Are second-hand products a threat?
Definitely. A seconds' market of indigenously manufactured equipment is healthy for sale of new equipment but the import of cheap second-hand equipment from other countries is cause for worry. We face a big threat in smaller class of machines where equipment is being imported and promoted from South Plast Asian countries in large quantities.
Tell us about new products introduced.
Telcon has introduced the Zaxis series of hydraulic excavators. This is the first E-Excavator with ICX (information controller) to offer diagnostic information to customers using a mobile PC. Another innovative product is the Tata-Hitachi EX110 hydraulic excavator, a variant on the existing EX100; it is 25-30 per cent more productive than its predecessor.
