CEMENT Update

Madras Cements to cross 1 crore tonne mark by 2009
Madras Cements Ltd is set to cross the crore mark with regard to annual cement manufacturing capacity by end-2009. It will be operationalising addition capacity of 4 million tonne per year to supplement the current capacity of 6 mta. The company is also doubling its wind power generation capacity to 120 MW, which would lead to significant savings in energy costs. Buoyancy in demand for cement coupled with a tight rein on costs has enabled the company to post a year-on-year net profit growth of almost 300 per cent in 2006-07. Another factor that contributed to the splendid performance was the achievement of 95 per cent capacity utilisation to produce 56.7 mt during 2006-07, against 79 per cent in the previous year.
