On a Growth Path
Everest is a firm that has grown from being a roofing products
company to become an organisation which offers diversified
range of solutions for all building construction needs. With
over 20 offices, five manufacturing facilities, a workforce
exceeding 2,000 and over 4,500 retail points for their Trump
card distribution, Everest has a Pan-India presence. Manish
Garg, President - Steel Building Solutions, Everest Industries
Ltd shares more details.
Tell us something more on your company’s explosive
growth?
Everest has been in business for over 75 years. We have been
always perceived as a leader but our vision is to be the deepest
penetrated housing and building company in India. We have
plans to double our turnover this year and touch Rs 1,000
crore next year.
What is the future of steel buildings in India?
Very bright!! Today many manufacturers feel that steel buildings
can be used only for factories and warehouses but the increasing
innovation in technology and organised sector players venturing
into this field have cause the market to open up.
Which are the interesting steel building projects that are
currently on?
We are doing a G+3 storeys school project at Pune and a building
with whopping 1,200 mt of steel at Mcnally Bharat Engineering
at WB.
What are the challenges faced by you owing to rising cost
of steel?
Many players have slowed down their plans for expansion because
of the rising cost of steel. However, these things are common
in a growing economy and would not affect much in the long
term.
Where do you see your company in the next five years?
With more manufacturing facilities across the country, we
want to be largest in the business with undoubtedly the most
versatile product offerings. We believe that the steel building
solutions business would contribute to about 25 per cent of
our turnover and double it by next year. Everest promises
to supply all types of PEBs in 90 days for which we invested
heavily in machines and extra buffer capacity at the Roorkee
plant with two automatic beam lines and most sophisticated
machinery. We can make over 300 mt of buildings every single
day.

Elevating Standards
Schindler’s policy of ‘continuous innovation’
that makes it a global leader in mobility solutions and services
is reflected in its two new product lines launched recently
with an aim to strengthen its position in India.
Founded in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1874 by the entrepreneur
Robert Schindler, the Schindler Group has expanded from a
local manufacturer of machines in Switzerland into a global
leader in mobility solutions and services. On its way to reach
where it is today, the company has also shaped the industry,
defined best practice as a mobility provider and as an employer,
and prospered in a highly competitive global environment.
The Schindler group has witnessed accelerated growth in the
past two and half decades as is evidenced by its market capitalisation
which has increased ten-fold to around CHF 10 billion during
this period and has ensured Schindler’s expansion into
a global leader.
Schindler has been present in India for 50 years, first through
a distribution agreement (since 1958) with ECE and later a
technical collaboration with Bharat Bijlee (in 1985). In 1998,
the company established a 100 per cent owned subsidiary to
further expand operations in India. Now Schindler has plans
to expand operations in India where elevator market is estimated
to be expanding by 15-20 per cent year-on-year, driven by
strong growth in real estate construction. The Schindler Group
recently launched two new product lines i.e. the best-selling
3000 series of elevators - the Schindler 3300 IN and the Schindler
5300 IN - for mid-rise residential and commercial buildings.
These mobility solutions are renowned for their intelligent
innovations, superior quality, tasteful design and impressive
spaciousness and silence.
Schindler’s 3000 series elevators are more spacious,
silent, safe and stylish than anything that has gone before.
Schindler’s miniaturisation technology means that cars
in standard elevator shafts can carry up to five extra passengers,
reducing the number of elevators needed, and saving energy.
The knock-on effect is that the amount of rentable space in
a building can be maximised. Another distinguishing feature
of Schindler’s new 3000 series elevator is the on-board
automatic evacuation system, which comes as a standard. This
feature ensures that in the event of a power failure, passengers
are safely transported to the nearest floor and open the elevator
doors.
Both the Schindler 3300 IN and the Schindler 5300 IN have
been designed to provide more space for the lift cabin.
“With these product lines, Schindler has taken all the
advantages of top-range elevators for high-rise buildings,
and made them available in the residential and commercial
segments,” commented Dr Christoph Lindenmeyer, responsible
for Schindler’s operations in India, Russia, the Middle
East and Africa (EMIA). “Previously, the economics of
low-rise elevators didn’t allow this level of quality
and comfort. But by developing a global product, Schindler
has realised sufficient economies of scale to make it possible,”
adds Dr Lindenmeyer. Truly the ingenious design, flexibility
of installation, competitive prices and Schindler’s
professional after-sales services make the Schindler 3300
IN and the Schindler 5300 IN highly attractive solutions for
real estate developers, architects and engineers. Apart form
the recently introduced elevator series, Schindler has executed
several other landmark projects in India which include elevators
for the Naveen Vidhan Bhawan, the Grand Hyatt hotel and the
45-storey Shreepathi Towers in Mumbai, the Hyatt Regency hotel
in Delhi, as well as escalators for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
and at the Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai airports. Schindler is
currently equipping the Imperial Towers at Tardeo, Mumbai,
India’s tallest building, with elevators that travel
at speeds of 6 m per second or 1,200 feet per minute.
Thus Schindler strengthens its position in India with leadership
through service andcontinuous product innovations. One brilliant
example of unique innovation by Schindler has been its Miconic-10
destination control system to manage traffic in a building.
As the company that pioneered the first destination control
system, Schindler has always been at the cutting edge of traffic
management and access-control technology. Some other recent
innovations include: the first patent for elevators without
a machine room; traffic management systems that plan passengers’
journeys and make provision for the disabled; personalised
access control systems, and the Schindler 7000 global high-rise
elevator program. Thus ‘Innovation’ is a key pillar
of Schindler’s strategy which helps it to maintain its
leading position. Further the company’s success is assured
through its strategic orientation defined in their terms as
‘Leadership through service’, a customer commitment
to provide high-quality, safe mobility solutions at all times
for the 900 million people who use Schindler products every
day.
