Record-breaking performance
If you’re wondering why K Raghuramaiah, Chairman, Paradip Port Trust, was recently awarded with the Bharatiya Siromani Puraskar for excellent performance in 2008-09 by the Institute of Economic Studies, well, here are the reasons.
Paradip Port, in 2008-09, the global meltdown notwithstanding, handled an all-time record traffic of 46.41 million tonne, which is a 9.36 per cent increase over the previous record of 42.44 million tonne in 2007-08. The port’s operating income during the year also increased to Rs 700.21 crore from Rs 639.98 crore in the previous year. Additionally, it handled 26.52 million tonne of export cargo and 19.89 million tonne of import cargo surpassing the previous records of 25.59 million tonne and 16.85 million tonne respectively. The port, for the first time, also handled 140,392 tonne of raw sugar, besides importing 1,575,842 tonne of crude oil through single point mooring. Need we say anything more!

Fairly rewarded
Whoever says business integrity is an outdated concept, hasn’t evidently heard of Arun Nanda, Executive Director & President, Infrastructure Development Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd and Sumit Banerjee, Managing Director, ACC Ltd. These two have been instrumental in promoting the importance of corporate governance in their companies and were recently awarded with the CFBP Jamnalal Bajaj awards for their fair business practices. While Nanda played a pivotal role in setting up the Corporate Governance Cell for overseeing the implementation of the company’s policies and their compliance, Banerjee is instrumental in ensuring that resources of the company are effectively used and both the management and employees work towards taking the company forward within the framework of effective accountability. The result is that while ACC is the only cement company to figure in the list of Consumer SuperBrands of India, Mahindra & Mahindra is the only Indian company to feature in the list of top tractor brands in the world. Thus, in their own little way, both Nanda and Banerjee have put forward a business model for the rest of the world to follow.
