IR demands Rs 2.51 lakh crore for projects
The Railways has made a Rs 2.51 lakh crore proposal to the
11th Five-Year Plan for carrying out various projects in the
country, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said. “Of
this, Rs 65,000 crore for projects have been allotted to Tamil
Nadu,” Velu said.“Projects worth Rs 5,500 crore
have been undertaken in the state even since UPA government
came to power in 2004. Railways have been a profit-making
venture for the past four years, with its profits for 2008-09
is expected to clock Rs 1 lakh crore, he said.
AAI plans feasibility study
Airports Authority of India (AAI) would soon be finalising
a consultant to undertake the techno-economic feasibility
study for the development of 325 airstrips across the country.
The consultant would be appointed by the end of this month,
while the feasibility study itself would take around three
months' time, according to VK Kalra, Executive Director, Key
Infrastructure Development, Airports Authority of India. The
development of each strip would entail investments of Rs 30-40
crore, he said.” Currently, the majorities of these
airstrips is unused or are being used for some training purposes
and so on. The feasibility study would determine what would
be the apt usage of these airstrips,” he said. These
strips would help improve regional connectivity and could
be utilised by ATR planes, he said.
ETA-KMC, NHAI in pact
National Highways Autho-rity of India (NHAI) has signed a
concession agreement with ETA-KMC consortium for six-laning
of 225.6-km stretch in Gurgaon-Jaipur stretch. The project
cost for the section, which is on NH-8, is estimated at Rs
1,896.25 crore. In a statement, NHAI said the project has
been awarded on BOT (toll) basis on DBFO (Design-Build-Finance-Operate)
pattern. The total project cost is Rs 1,896.25 crore and the
concession period is 12 years including construction period
of two and a half years.
Delhi gets AC buses
Now Delhiites will be able to commute in cool comforts of
air-conditioned and eco-friendly public buses at an affordable
fare. “We have identified three routes for the buses
having sitting capacity for 35 people each. Later on more
buses will be incorporated for the commuters,” a senior
official said. Of the eight cherry-coloured AC buses, two
will ply on the Ring Road route, three on route no 522 (Ambedkar
Nagar to Arya Samaj Road) and the remaining three on route
no 85 (Anand Vihar to Punjabi Bagh). The official added that
the fare ranges from a minimum of Rs 10 to a maximum of Rs
25 as per travel distance in the buses, which cost around
Rs 70 lakhs each.
Metro to be on track soon
The first metro rail corridor project in the city is beginning
to move forward with a Chinese company bagging the Rs 604
crore contract to supply 16 trains.
The 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor is set to be
operational by 2010-end. Mumbai Metro One, the special purpose
vehicle formed to undertake construction, has selected CSR
Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Company - a 100-year old subsidiary
of the government-owned China South Locomotive and Rolling
Stock Corporation. Officials say the first four-coach train
will be rolled out within 18 months and all 16 trains in the
next two years. The contract for first metro line was awarded
to a consortium lead by Reliance Energy. Mumbai Metro One
hopes to finish the project in less than three years.
J-K to spend Rs 500 crore
Jammu and Kashmir government is spending Rs 500 crore to raise
40 important infrastructure projects including construction
of roads and bridges in Kashmir division, a senior official
said. Work has already started on 32 projects, Mehboob Iqbal,
Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir said. Iqbal said Rs 278 crore
are being spend on 16 road projects while the economic reconstruction
agency is incurring Rs 42 crore on construction of 17 bridges.
